Overview

BioDesign is a multidisciplinary, team-based approach to medical innovation. The program connects between clinicians from the Hadassah Medical Center and outstanding bioengineering and business graduate students from the Hebrew University and tutors them in bringing medical innovations to the market. Groups identify clinical needs; carry out careful market analysis and produce patent-protected engineering solutions in one year.

BioDesign is taught by Hebrew University faculty, clinical experts, entrepreneurs, and business executives. As such, it provides a real-world experience in an academic environment aimed at nurturing a new generation of medical innovators. The program is sponsored by medical giants Boston Scientific and the Rick Hansen   Institute and has already generated several spin-offs raising $2 million in investment.

The BioDesign Innovation program is headed by Prof. Yaakov Nahmias, director of the Grass Center for Bioengineering at the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Prof. Yoav Mintz, director of the Center for Innovative Surgery at Hadassah Medical Center in partnership with Prof. Dan Galai, former dean of the Hebrew University School of Business Administration and Prof. Chaim Lotan, director of the Heart Institute at Hadassah Medical Center.

Our Vision

Medical innovation aims to create an efficient, cost effective, health care system, by bringing cutting-edge engineering solutions to bear on clinical needs. The process requires an in-depth understanding of finance, medicine, engineering, and patent law, causing most ideas to fail before reaching the market.

Therefore there is a need for a multidisciplinary program that teaches innovation in an academic setting.
